2018 DF95 Region 5 Champs

April 7-8, 2018 – Goodyear, AZ

Your SCSN Editor attended and competed in this event this past weekend and had a fabulous time.  Below is the event report from the WVM Commodore Allan Vinson who not only hosted and produced this event in first class fashion but won it!  I will be back for more events.

Skippers,

What a weekend!  I hope you all had a great time and it was worth the trip for those of you that came from out of town.  I had a great time meeting new skippers, and seeing old friends.  The winds were great to us, and Estrella, South Lake has turned out to be an excellent venue for this boat.

On behalf of the West Valley RC Mariners I want to thank you all for taking the time to sail in this event.  The final results are attached to this document. There was some excellent sailing this weekend, not just at the front of the pack, but close racing throughout the fleet.  I was very impressed with Mike Eades second day surge, Ken Campbell’s ability to come back from any misfortune, and Graham Johnson finishing out of the top five three times all weekend.
Stephen Washburn’s four wins and a multitude of top 5’s were impressive, and it seemed the bigger the wind the more comfortable he got, which is scary to light wind sailors from AZ.    The battle between Jim Tarr, Rick Smith and David Van Dalsen was fun to watch and as close as it gets.  It was great to have my dad there to share it all with as well.
Big thank you to those that planned and helped put on the event.  Hap McGill, Dave Nydell, Mike Eades, Al Stiewing, Clairissa Vinson, Rick Smith, Gary Wollenhaupt, Jed Korthals, and Mike Doyle.  Without you these things don’t ever happen.

We pulled Al Stiewing out of Semi-retirement to run the event for us and he did an excellent job, which just means we will ask him again, I can hear him grumbling already!  We did appreciate it though.  I hope to see and sail with you all again down the road sometime.

Big Boat Sailors use DF Racing Boats to sail small, grow fast!

 BY CHARLES LEMAHIEU ·

All across North America, the DF65 & DF95 are expanding beyond the traditional model yachting enthusiasts and are finding new venues in “big boat” yacht clubs and sailing clubs at an incredible pace!

The availability, instant delivery and affordability of the DF95 & DF65  are helping these big boat sailors build fleets and build interest in sailing beyond their normal membership avenues. At a time when interest in sailing has been shrinking globally, the RC sailing approach has been a welcome, new fun alternative  to sailing for these yacht clubs to increase interest and activity! Historically many of the these clubs have found RC sailing too hard to build, too expensive, and too far on the hobby side to get a fleet up and racing.

The development  the last couple years of easy to assemble, and affordable boats like the DF65 & DF95  have caused many of these clubs to rethink their approach to radio sailing, and redefining their “frostbiting ” sailing to include RC boats.
