Twenty five IOM sailors from California, Oregon, Washington, New York, and Idaho gathered in Foster City, CA to compete in the IOM District Six Championships. This Foster City venue recently hosted the IOM World Championships in 2015.
25 Races were completed over three days where SoCal’s Mark Golison dominated the event wire to wire with a performance that could not be matched or challenged. NorCal’s Gary Boell sailed a strong event placing second with NorCal’s Chris Sullivan also sailing very well placing third.
SoCal Radio Sailors Mark Golison, Larry Grant, Nick Allen, Craig Mackey and Dennis Rogers traveled to Foster City this past weekend to compete with their International One Meters.
From Larry Grant who wrote up a wrap up piece for the event:
The 2016 IOM NB classic, a local ranking event for the US IOM seeding is now in the books. Seventeen skippers raced on the 2015 World Championship venue at the Leo J Ryan Park pond in Foster City, CA. Because there was only one fleet, there was plenty of racing for all.
The twelve race Saturday portion was sailed in mostly just under to just over mid “A” rig range on the pond’s eastern shore off the skate board park. Jess Atkinson in his V9 displayed his brilliance on the day by leading the event at the Saturday night break.
The seventeen race Sunday portion was sailed on the pond’s north shore to accommodate a westerly in under mid to just under high end “A” rig range. Sunday’s scoring brought about wholesale gains in the standings from Saturday’s positions, including Dennis Rogers moving from 11th to finishing 8th overall, Larry Grant moving from 10th to 7th, Gary Boell 9th to 6th, Craig Mackey 5th to 4th and Mark Golison 4th to 3rd. Also, the event champ John Ebey in his BritPOP! moved up one spot on Sunday to earn yet another reason to beat him next time.
Ron Locke of NB IOM and ODOM stardom directed the Race Management like a champ. Ron’s left and right hands for the event were Kevin Mullnix a NB ODOM and Soling 50 regular plus Jim Bitter a NB & SFMYC ODOM vet. Thanks you guys for sacrificing your Memorial Day Weekend so we could scrutinize your every move.
SoCal IOM Sailors Mark Golison, Dennis Rogers and Craig Mackey made the trip up to Seattle to compete in the COW Regatta this past weekend. Cool and rainy weather greeted the competitors and presented some challenges, but it did not dampen the spirits of the sailors or hinder the competition from being completed.
NorCal’s John Ebey had a near flawless performance winning the event. Craig Mackey finished second and Mark Golison took third place.
Your SCSN Editor was invited by Long Beach’s Mark Golison to enter and compete with his back up V8 IOM in this years IOM Midwinters hosted by the San Diego Argonauts Club in Mission Bay, CA. I had a fantastic weekend sailing and trying (See the results – 24th) to race these exquisite model yachts. I also met a fine group of competitors who welcomed me and the other two rookies into their fraternity. Thanks all, and thank you Mark for the hospitality!
