2015 Ensenada Race Wrap Up

N2E-15logo

This year’s race from Newport Beach to Ensenada put on by NOSA was a light air drifter.  It took the big trimaran Mighty Merloe 17 hours plus to complete the course, crossing the finish line first on elapsed time about half an hour ahead of the other big tri Orion.

About four hours later, the first five monohulls crossed the finish line as a pack, with Bob Lane’s Medicine Man taking monohull line honors by a mere four seconds over David Team’s Rebel Yell and six seconds ahead of Roy P. Disney’s Pyewacket.  It’s OK and Bad Pak were fourth and fifth.

The rest of the fleet trickled in over the next 12 hours or so as the wind never really filled in.

The overall winner of the race this year is John Shulze’s SC 50 Horizon representing Balboa Yacht Club.

Socal Sailors shine at Charleston Race Week

CRW2015

Newport Harbor’s Bruce Ayres won the Melges 24 class in a tiebreaker with Ryan Davidson.   Ryan is a junior at College of Charleston and we hear from dad Gary Davidson, was asked to steer at the last minute when the owner had to cancel.  Ryan is a Balboa YC member who grew up through their Jr. Program and has sailed Gov Cup the last few years.  The M24 class was truly lead by So Cal sailors. – RESULTS

Long Beach’s Bruce and Jay Golison placed fifth in the Melges 20 class, which used this event as their US National Championships. This was their second event in the class. – RESULTS

US Sailing Team Sperry Southern California Gathering May 16th

Race to Rio

It’s only going to happen once in all of 2015 – On Saturday May 16, ten Olympic hopefuls – members of US Sailing Team Sperry – will be in Marina del Rey for a day-long event that is totally unlike anything that’s happening this year, anywhere in the United States of America. For 12 carefully choreographed hours, the sailing community will have a plethora of opportunities to interact with these highly focused athletes, and with Gary Jobson, Paul Cayard and Josh Adams, the Managing Director of U.S. Olympic Sailing. Make no mistake – this ‘gathering of the eagles’ is an Olympic fundraiser, but it’s been structured as an exciting, insightful, eye opening, interactive and totally enjoyable experience for both juniors and seniors.

The event has been specifically structured for the Southern California sailing community and will be hosted at the California Yacht Club. The prospective Olympic athletes will begin arriving at CYC early in the morning, and they will be bringing their boats with them. Nearly five hours will be dedicated to chalk talks, workshops and on-the-water coaching for juniors. However, plenty of time has been set aside so everyone can meet, greet and take photos with the athletes, examine their boats and discuss their campaigns.  In addition to the US Sailing Team Sperry athletes Gary Jobson, Paul Cayard and Josh Adams will be on site discussing the upcoming Rio 2016 Olympic Games and what it takes to bring home US medals.   Paul Cayard whose AmericaOne Foundation, recently launched Project Pipeline – a program that is all about getting America back on the Olympic podium and raising the level of sailing talent in the United States across the board – will be discussing the 10 year outlook for the program.

US Etchells National Championships – SDYC

Etchells Insignia

From Scuttlebutt:

San Diego, CA (April 12, 2015)  – The 2015 Etchells National Championship (Apr 10-12) proved the old sailing adage that nothing in a regatta is certain until the very last race. Marvin Beckmann and his crew faced a difficult task going into the last race of the regatta. After a scratch performance in Race Seven, they had put five boats between them and Etchells World Champion Bill Hardesty in order to win the regatta. After winning a key pin off the starting line, Beckmann and his crew proved they were up to the task by finishing with their third bullet of the regatta. – See more at Scuttlebutt
